The Luciferian Perfectionist Order: Reform Satanism

It goes without saying that Satanism has acquired somewhat of a negative image--in no small part due to self-proclaimed "Satanists" who invoke the devil as the avatar of lust, debauchery, hedonism, gluttony, etc. The Luciferian Perfectionist Order reclaims the original image of Lucifer, the martyred ethicist, and advocates above all the pursuit of intellectual, scientific, and aesthetic excellence--and a liberation of the individual from all interfering dogma and false consciousness, whether that of religion or consumer capitalism . . .

The Lucifer Example

The Bible provides few details about Lucifer's "fall" from Heaven. The verse in Isaiah which is often supposed to refer his expulsion probably actually refers to the king of Babylon. Nevertheless, the view of Satan as the prideful rebel is well-entrenched in Christian doctrine, and the LPO draws largely from this narrative . . .

What Lucifer does not represent are hate, vengence, intolerance, greed, lust, gluttony, etc. The fact that Lucifer rebelled against God does not entail that his moral philosophy was diametrically opposed to divine law! No one is pure evil--it is a central Luciferian precept that this myth, well-rooted in dualistic religion, does not accurately depict human nature--and even the most abominable tyrants can institute benign policy. The evil of absolute rulers (e.g. God) is their insistence on obedience as the sovereign moral principle . . .

Aside from the frightening large Christian fundamentalist movement, obedience is regarded far less in modern American culture than it has been in other times and places. During the mid-twentieth century, we witnessed the evils of totalitarianism. We have become disenchanted with our own leaders. We pride ourselves on freedom--but are we free? NO! We are slaves to consumer capitalism, the American nightmare . . .

It is not contradictory that the titles Light-Bearer and Prince of Darkness refer to the same figure. Neither light nor dark can be known but by its contrast; the bearer of light cannot exist without darkness to illuminate. Lucifer could not function in Heaven, for the light of God overwhelmed the city. In Heaven there is no light, no darkness--in a metaphoric sense, no mystery. All truth was contained in God; for his servants, nothing remained to be known. . . . Once one is unshackled from dogmatic truths, he finds himself enshrouded by darkness--and his eternal quest for knowledge can begin. Before one can learn, one must learn to doubt; one must put aside all ensnaring beliefs and values. This is the central lesson of Luciferianism.

Agnosticism

It should be emphasized that Luciferianism (like the Church of Satan and other Satanic movements) does not revere Lucifer as an actual deity, person, or anything other than a myth. The Luciferian Perfectionist Order is theologically agnostic, epistemologically skeptic, and metaethically subjectivist. No knowledge is ever absolute; this is why the quest for knowledge is lifelong. Similarly, although we follow a specific ethical system, we acknowledge that there is no objective reason why our system should be superior to any other. We believe that it is so--but we cannot prove it.

Additionally, we pledge that, should the Christian God happen to exist, we choose to accept whatever punishment he decrees rather than spend eternity as a braindead sycophant in the court of a belligerant, self-obsessed tyrant.

We will not be slaves to any deity callous and egotistical enough to oppose our humanitarian ideals!

Asceticism

Sadly, Satanism has come to be associated with the fulfillment of carnal desires and material greed. This is a perversion of the Biblical narrative, in which Lucifer's sole pursuit is knowledge. It is clear that material wealth, sex, food, and mindless entertainment are the "gods" of modern American culture; that is, they consume of lives and thoughts, stultifying our true potential as intellectual, creative beings. Luciferian Perfectionists adamantly reject this false idols! By the standards of consumer capitalism, we are monkish renunciants. By the standards of monks, however, we are positively hedonistic.

On Avarice. Luciferian Perfectionists are minimalistic in our spending. We allocate our money to a basic survival and to productive goods. Naturally, what are "acceptable" purchases will vary from person to person. No Luciferian Perfectionist drives a Hummer, but vehicular needs are naturally dependent on transportation needs . . . For home-based recording artist, a quality surround-sound system is perfectly worthwhile. . . . Scholars and writers can exist quite well in a one-bedroom apartment; those who paint large murals might demand a larger space . . . And so forth.

On Lust. The sex drive is a vestigal instinct from a past in which infant mortality was high, life expectancy was short, and reproduction was essential. . . . Of course, it is a gross understatement to say that popular culture has done nothing to diminish the importance of the sex drive--nor has psychology, for the few highly-evolved individuals who do not possess this instinct are branded as pathological. . . . The Luciferian Perfectionist Order admits that humanity, insofar as it is too survive, must reproduce through natural means. . . . Outside of procreation, however, we advocate celibacy.

On Gluttony. With nearly two-thirds of the population overweight, one-third obese, gluttony clearly ranks near avarice and lust as on of modern America's greatest social ills. . . . LPO promotes vegetarianism as the healthiest, most economical, and most eco-friendly diet. We also recommend limiting non-productive caloric intake, such as sugars and fats.

On Sloth. . . . The public itself is hardly to blame for its dependence on such mind-numbing forms of entertainment. , after all the shopping, sex, and dining, what time or energy remains for productive leisure?

On Anger. This sin is not an exact contrast Luciferian ascetism, but while we're at it, we might as well continue, eh?

On Envy. Envy is a counterproductive force, . It goes without saying that envy is also the lifeblood of consumer capitalism . . . Envy is kept in check through the practice of abstaining from excess.

On Pride. Lastly, that sin which God most hates--with which he charged Lucifer and which is the only of the seven deadly sins that the Luciferian Perfectionist Order, in his honour, upholds. . . . Note that pride is not bigotry, a monotheistic virtue.

. . . On the other hand, practices such as starvation and self-mutilation are counterproductive. Self-denial should not reach the extremes of impinged on physical health or, indeed, comfort. Luciferian Perfectionists are not primitivists! We fully embrace the labour-saving, life-extending benefits that technology has brought.

In Sum . . .

The Luciferian "clergy", if you will, abide by the following restrains: (0) abscence of debt, (1) celibacy (no procreation), (2) vegetarianism (may include seafood, may exclude egg and diary), (3) strict limitation on consumption of empty calories, (4) strict limitation on purchases of non-necessary, non-educational goods, (5) strict limitation of frivilous, mind-numbing entertainment.
